Arborist Glossary
Tree Care Terms Explained
Whether you're dealing with a tree removal, scheduling trimming and pruning, or just trying to understand what your arborist is telling you — this glossary covers the terms Las Vegas homeowners encounter most. Written in plain language with desert-specific context so you know exactly what applies to your trees.
A
African Sumac (Searsia lancea)
Tree SpeciesAn evergreen tree with graceful, weeping form and moderate water needs. One of the most commonly planted trees in Las Vegas commercial and residential landscapes. Tolerates alkaline soil well and provides year-round shade and privacy.
ANSI A300 Standards
Industry & CertificationThe American National Standards for tree care operations, covering pruning, fertilization, support systems, lightning protection, and more. These are the industry standards that professional arborists follow. Benjamin's Tree Service adheres to ANSI A300 standards for all tree care work.
Aphids
Pests & InsectsSmall sap-sucking insects that cluster on new growth and the undersides of leaves. They produce sticky honeydew that attracts sooty mold. Common on ash, elm, and mulberry trees in Las Vegas. Natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings often control aphid populations without chemical intervention.
Arborist
Tree Care BasicsA trained professional who specializes in the care and maintenance of trees, including planting, pruning, diagnosis, treatment, and removal. In Las Vegas, arborists must understand desert-specific challenges like extreme heat, alkaline soil, and limited water.
About Benjamin CastroB
Branch Collar
Pruning & TrimmingThe swollen area at the base of a branch where it connects to the trunk or a larger branch. Proper pruning cuts are made just outside the branch collar, preserving the tree's natural defense zone and allowing the wound to close properly.
Bucket Truck (Aerial Lift)
Safety & EquipmentA truck-mounted platform that elevates workers to access the canopy safely. Used for pruning, removal, and inspection of tall trees. Not all properties in Las Vegas have access for bucket trucks due to narrow side yards and gated communities, which may require climber-based access instead.
C
Caliche
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificA hardened layer of calcium carbonate found throughout the Las Vegas Valley soil, sometimes as solid as concrete. Caliche blocks root penetration, prevents drainage, and raises soil pH above 7.5, causing nutrient lockout. Breaking through caliche during tree planting and backfilling with amended soil is essential for long-term tree survival.
Desert Tree Care GuideCanker
Tree Health & DiseaseA dead, sunken area on the bark of a tree caused by fungal or bacterial infection. Cankers weaken the structural integrity of branches and trunks. In desert climates, cankers often develop after sunscald or mechanical injury provides an entry point for pathogens.
Canopy
Tree Care BasicsThe upper layer of branches and leaves that forms the crown of a tree. In Las Vegas, a healthy canopy provides critical shade that can reduce ground temperatures by 20 to 30 degrees, protecting both the tree's own trunk from sunscald and surrounding landscape from heat stress.
Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis)
Tree SpeciesA medium to large deciduous tree valued for its excellent fall color — one of the few trees that provides vibrant red and orange autumn foliage in Las Vegas. Moderate water needs, good heat tolerance, and a clean, well-structured canopy.
Chipper
Safety & EquipmentA machine that reduces branches and limbs into wood chips. Professional tree services use chippers to efficiently process debris on-site. The resulting chips can be repurposed as mulch — an especially valuable resource in Las Vegas landscapes.
Chlorosis
Tree Health & DiseaseA condition where leaves turn yellow due to insufficient chlorophyll production, usually caused by iron or manganese deficiency. Chlorosis is extremely common in Las Vegas because the alkaline caliche soil (pH 7.5 and higher) locks out iron and other micronutrients. Treatment includes soil acidification and iron chelate applications.
Signs of Nutrient DeficiencyClark County Tree Ordinances
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificLocal regulations governing tree removal, planting, and maintenance on both private and public property in Clark County. Some HOAs and municipalities require permits before removing trees above a certain size. Property owners should check with their local jurisdiction before removing large trees.
Commercial Tree Service
Industry & CertificationTree care services tailored for commercial properties, HOAs, apartment complexes, retail centers, and municipal facilities. Commercial tree work in Las Vegas often involves large-scale pruning contracts, emergency response agreements, and compliance with HOA or municipal landscape codes.
Commercial Tree ServiceCompaction
Soil & Root SystemsCompression of soil that reduces pore space, limiting water infiltration and oxygen availability to roots. Construction traffic, foot traffic, and heavy machinery are common causes. Much of the Las Vegas Valley already has naturally compacted soil due to caliche, making additional compaction particularly harmful.
Crane Removal
Tree Removal & Stump WorkUsing a crane to lift sections of a tree out during removal. Required for extremely large trees or trees in locations where even sectional removal is too risky, such as trees directly over a home, pool, or utility lines.
Crown
Tree Care BasicsThe entire above-ground portion of a tree, including the trunk, branches, and foliage. Crown health is assessed during tree inspections to determine structural integrity and overall vitality.
Tree Assessment ReportsCrown Raising
Pruning & TrimmingRemoving lower branches to increase clearance beneath the tree for pedestrians, vehicles, or structures. Common in commercial properties and HOA-managed communities across the Las Vegas Valley.
HOA & Property Manager Tree CareCrown Reduction
Pruning & TrimmingReducing the overall size of a tree's canopy by cutting branches back to lateral branches that are large enough to assume the terminal role. This is a proper technique used when a tree has outgrown its space — unlike topping, crown reduction maintains the tree's natural form.
Crown Thinning
Pruning & TrimmingSelective removal of interior branches to increase light penetration and air circulation within the canopy without changing the tree's overall shape. In Las Vegas, crown thinning reduces wind resistance during high-wind events that hit the valley multiple times per year.
Trimming & Pruning ServicesD
Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera)
Tree SpeciesA large palm producing edible dates, common in commercial and residential landscapes across the valley. Date palms require annual fruit and frond removal. Their thorny frond bases make trimming a job for experienced professionals with proper safety equipment.
Palm Tree ServiceDeadwooding
Pruning & TrimmingThe removal of dead, dying, or diseased branches from a tree. Deadwooding is a critical safety practice in Las Vegas where dead branches become brittle in the dry heat and can fall without warning, especially during monsoon wind events.
Emergency Tree ServiceDeciduous
Tree Care BasicsTrees that shed their leaves annually, typically in fall. In the Las Vegas Valley, common deciduous trees include Chinese pistache, mulberry, and ash. Deciduous trees offer summer shade and allow winter sunlight through — a valuable trait in desert landscaping.
Deep Root Watering
Soil & Root SystemsAn irrigation method that delivers water directly to the root zone, 12 to 24 inches below the surface. In Las Vegas, deep root watering is far more effective than surface irrigation because it encourages deep root growth, reduces evaporation loss, and helps flush salt buildup from the root zone.
Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis)
Tree SpeciesA small to medium tree native to the desert Southwest, producing showy trumpet-shaped flowers from spring through fall. Highly drought-tolerant once established. A popular residential choice in Spring Valley, Paradise, and throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
Desert-Adapted Species
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificTrees that have evolved to thrive in hot, arid conditions with alkaline soil and limited water. For Las Vegas, the best-adapted species include mesquite, palo verde, desert willow, ironwood, and native acacia. These trees require far less water and maintenance than non-native species once established.
Popular Trees for Las VegasDieback
Tree Health & DiseaseThe progressive death of branches starting from the tips and working inward. In Las Vegas trees, dieback is commonly caused by drought stress, salt buildup in soil from hard water irrigation, or root damage from caliche.
Drip Line
Tree Care BasicsThe imaginary circle on the ground directly beneath the outermost tips of a tree's branches. This is where rain naturally drips off the canopy. In Las Vegas, irrigation emitters should be placed at and beyond the drip line, not at the trunk, to encourage outward root growth.
Drop Zone
Safety & EquipmentThe designated area on the ground where cut branches and trunk sections are safely lowered or allowed to fall during tree work. Establishing and maintaining a clear drop zone is a fundamental safety practice, particularly important on tight Las Vegas residential lots.
E
Evapotranspiration (ET)
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificThe combined water loss from soil evaporation and plant transpiration. Las Vegas has one of the highest ET rates in the country — a mature shade tree can lose 50 to 100 gallons of water per day during peak summer. Irrigation schedules must account for ET rates to keep trees properly hydrated.
Evergreen
Tree Care BasicsTrees that retain their foliage year-round. Popular Las Vegas evergreens include African sumac, ficus, and various pine species. Evergreens provide consistent shade and privacy screening throughout the year.
F
Fan Palm (Washingtonia)
Tree SpeciesMexican fan palms and California fan palms are ubiquitous throughout the Las Vegas Valley. They tolerate extreme heat and alkaline soil but require regular trimming to remove dead fronds and heavy seed pods. Dead fronds are a fire hazard and can harbor pests.
Palm Tree ServiceFlat-Headed Borer
Pests & InsectsWood-boring beetles whose larvae tunnel beneath bark, damaging the cambium layer. Trees stressed by heat, drought, or recent transplanting are most vulnerable. Sunscald wounds on Las Vegas trees are a common entry point for flat-headed borers.
G
Giant Palm Borer
Pests & InsectsA large beetle (Dinapate wrightii) whose larvae bore into the trunks of fan palms. Native to the desert Southwest, including the Las Vegas area. Infested palms develop holes in the trunk and may eventually become structurally compromised. There is no effective chemical treatment — removal is often the only solution for heavily infested palms.
Girdling
Tree Health & DiseaseThe removal or damage of bark in a complete ring around the trunk or a branch, cutting off nutrient and water flow. Girdling can be caused by improper staking, ties left on too long, rodent damage, or weed trimmer strikes. It is often fatal if not caught early.
Girdling Roots
Soil & Root SystemsRoots that grow in a circular pattern around the trunk base, eventually strangling the tree by cutting off water and nutrient flow. Often caused by container-grown trees that were root-bound at planting. Proper root preparation during planting prevents this long-term structural problem.
H
Hazard Tree
Tree Removal & Stump WorkA tree with structural defects that make it likely to fail and cause injury or property damage. Common hazard indicators include large dead branches, trunk cracks, root decay, severe lean, and co-dominant stems with included bark. Hazard tree assessment is a critical part of arborist inspections in Las Vegas, especially after monsoon storms.
When Your Tree Needs Professional CareHeat Island Effect
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificThe phenomenon where developed areas are significantly hotter than surrounding natural desert due to pavement, buildings, and reduced vegetation. Central Las Vegas can be 10 to 15 degrees hotter than outlying areas. Strategic tree planting is one of the most effective ways to combat urban heat islands.
I
ISA Certified Arborist
Industry & CertificationA professional designation from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), indicating that the arborist has passed a rigorous exam and maintains ongoing education in tree care science. Hiring an ISA Certified Arborist ensures your trees are cared for using current, research-based practices rather than outdated or harmful techniques.
About Our TeamL
Leaf Scorch
Tree Health & DiseaseBrowning of leaf margins caused by the tree's inability to supply water to leaf edges fast enough to replace moisture lost through transpiration. In Las Vegas, leaf scorch is a constant summer threat, especially during wind events when evapotranspiration spikes dramatically.
Liability Insurance
Industry & CertificationInsurance coverage that protects both the tree service company and the property owner in case of damage or injury during tree work. Reputable companies like Benjamin's Tree Service carry comprehensive liability insurance and workers' compensation. Always ask for proof of insurance before hiring any tree service.
Licensed Contractor
Industry & CertificationIn Nevada, tree service companies performing work above a certain dollar threshold must hold a valid contractor's license from the Nevada State Contractors Board. Always verify that your tree service is properly licensed, bonded, and insured — unlicensed operators put your property and safety at risk.
Lion's Tailing
Pruning & TrimmingAn improper pruning technique where all interior branches are stripped, leaving foliage only at the branch tips. This creates a "lollipop" shape that increases the risk of branch failure and sunscald on the trunk. Reputable arborists never perform lion's tailing.
M
Mesquite (Prosopis)
Tree SpeciesThe most reliable shade tree for the Las Vegas Valley. Chilean mesquite, honey mesquite, and velvet mesquite all thrive in extreme desert heat, tolerate alkaline soil, develop deep root systems, and require minimal supplemental water once established. They provide filtered shade and are a top recommendation for Las Vegas landscapes.
Popular Trees for Las VegasMondell Pine (Afghan Pine)
Tree SpeciesOne of the few pine species that performs well in the Las Vegas Valley. Tolerates heat and alkaline soil better than most conifers. Provides evergreen screening and can reach 30 to 50 feet. Watch for pine bark beetle in stressed specimens.
Monsoon Season
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificThe period from roughly mid-June through September when the Las Vegas Valley experiences brief but intense thunderstorms with heavy rain, high winds, and sometimes hail. Monsoon storms are the primary cause of emergency tree failures in the valley, with wind gusts exceeding 70 mph that can topple poorly structured trees.
Emergency Tree ServiceMulberry (Morus)
Tree SpeciesCommon throughout older Las Vegas neighborhoods. Fruitless mulberry was once heavily planted for fast shade but has fallen out of favor due to aggressive roots, weak wood, and susceptibility to sooty canker. Requires regular pruning and monitoring.
Mulch
Tree Care BasicsOrganic material (wood chips, bark, compost) spread around the base of a tree to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. In the Las Vegas desert, a 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch is essential for reducing water evaporation from the soil surface.
Mycorrhizae
Soil & Root SystemsBeneficial fungi that form symbiotic relationships with tree roots, dramatically extending the root system's ability to absorb water and nutrients. In the nutrient-poor, alkaline soils of the Las Vegas Valley, mycorrhizal inoculants applied at planting can significantly improve tree establishment and long-term health.
P
Palm Skinning
Pruning & TrimmingRemoving the old leaf bases (boots) from a palm trunk for aesthetic purposes. In Las Vegas, palm skinning is a common service for Washington fan palms and date palms throughout residential and commercial properties.
Palm Tree ServicePalo Verde (Parkinsonia)
Tree SpeciesA signature desert tree with distinctive green bark that photosynthesizes even when the tree is leafless. Desert Museum palo verde is the most popular variety in Henderson and Summerlin landscapes. Produces bright yellow flowers in spring and is extremely drought-tolerant.
Palo Verde Beetle (Derobrachus hovorei)
Pests & InsectsA large, intimidating beetle (3 to 4 inches long) that emerges from the soil in summer months across the Las Vegas Valley. The adult beetles are harmless, but their larvae feed on tree roots — particularly palo verde trees — for several years before emerging. Heavy larval feeding can weaken or kill young trees.
pH (Soil)
Soil & Root SystemsA measure of soil acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Las Vegas soil typically tests between 7.5 and 8.5 — highly alkaline. This high pH locks out essential nutrients like iron and manganese, causing chlorosis in many tree species. Soil testing and targeted amendments are standard practice for Las Vegas arborists.
Pine Bark Beetle
Pests & InsectsSmall beetles that bore into pine bark to lay eggs, disrupting the tree's vascular system. Stressed Mondell pines and Aleppo pines in Las Vegas are especially vulnerable, particularly during drought or when irrigation is insufficient. Signs include small bore holes, sawdust-like frass on bark, and browning needles.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Safety & EquipmentSafety gear required for tree work, including hard hats, eye protection, hearing protection, chainsaw chaps, climbing harnesses, and high-visibility clothing. Professional tree services carry full PPE for their crews — a key difference between licensed arborists and unlicensed operators.
Pruning Seal
Pruning & TrimmingA wound dressing applied to pruning cuts. Modern arboriculture research shows that pruning seals are unnecessary and can actually trap moisture and promote decay. Proper pruning technique (cutting just outside the branch collar) allows the tree to seal its own wounds naturally.
R
Red Date Scale
Pests & InsectsA scale insect that attacks date palms and other palm species in the Las Vegas Valley. Heavy infestations cause yellowing fronds, stunted growth, and can eventually kill the palm if left untreated.
Rigging
Safety & EquipmentThe system of ropes, pulleys, and hardware used to safely lower branches and sections of wood during tree removal or pruning. Professional rigging is essential in Las Vegas where most trees are near structures, block walls, pools, and power lines.
Tree Removal ServicesRoot Rot
Tree Health & DiseaseA fungal disease that attacks the root system, often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. In Las Vegas, root rot is common in trees planted in caliche soil where water pools rather than draining. Symptoms include wilting, yellowing leaves, and a spongy feel at the trunk base.
Root Sprouting
Tree Removal & Stump WorkNew shoot growth from remaining roots after a tree is removed. Some species, like mulberry and Chinese elm, are aggressive root sprouters. Stump grinding and root treatment help prevent unwanted regrowth.
Root Zone
Soil & Root SystemsThe soil area where a tree's roots grow and absorb water and nutrients. For most trees, the root zone extends well beyond the drip line — often 2 to 3 times the canopy radius. Understanding the root zone is critical in Las Vegas where irrigation placement determines tree health.
S
Salt Burn
Tree Health & DiseaseDamage to tree roots and foliage caused by high sodium levels in irrigation water. Las Vegas municipal water contains elevated mineral content, and when combined with low rainfall that would normally flush salts from the soil, salt accumulation can reach toxic levels for sensitive tree species.
Sectional Removal
Tree Removal & Stump WorkA tree removal technique where the tree is taken down in sections using ropes and rigging rather than felled in one piece. This technique is used when space is limited or when the tree is near structures, power lines, or other obstacles — which is the case for most residential removals in Las Vegas.
Slime Flux (Wetwood)
Tree Health & DiseaseA bacterial condition that causes dark, foul-smelling liquid to ooze from wounds or cracks in the bark. Common in elm, mulberry, and cottonwood trees in the Las Vegas area. While unsightly, slime flux is rarely fatal on its own but indicates internal bacterial activity.
SNWA Water Restrictions
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificThe Southern Nevada Water Authority regulates outdoor watering schedules to conserve Lake Mead water. Seasonal watering restrictions limit the days and times homeowners can irrigate. Trees need supplemental deep watering even within these restrictions — understanding how to irrigate trees properly under SNWA rules is critical for tree survival.
Soil Amendment
Soil & Root SystemsMaterials mixed into existing soil to improve its physical or chemical properties. In Las Vegas, common amendments include sulfur (to lower pH), iron chelate (to address chlorosis), compost (to improve water retention), and gypsum (to improve soil structure in heavy clay or caliche).
Sooty Canker
Tree Health & DiseaseA fungal disease (Neoscytalidium dimidiatum) that thrives in extreme heat, making it particularly problematic in the Las Vegas Valley. Sooty canker causes bark to crack and peel, revealing a black, powdery fungal layer underneath. It commonly affects mulberry, ash, and cottonwood trees and often enters through pruning wounds made during hot weather.
Spider Mites
Pests & InsectsTiny arachnids that thrive in hot, dry conditions — making Las Vegas an ideal environment. They cause stippling and bronzing on leaves, and heavy infestations produce visible webbing. Common on ornamental trees and shrubs, especially during peak summer heat.
Structural Pruning
Pruning & TrimmingPruning young trees to develop a strong, well-spaced branch structure that will resist wind and storm damage as the tree matures. In Las Vegas, structural pruning is especially important for fast-growing species like tipu trees and mulberries that are prone to limb failure.
Stump Grinding
Tree Removal & Stump WorkUsing a specialized machine to grind a tree stump below ground level, typically 6 to 12 inches deep. The resulting wood chips can be used as mulch. Stump grinding eliminates tripping hazards and prevents root sprouting from the remaining stump.
Stump Grinding ServicesSunscald
Tree Health & DiseaseDamage to tree bark caused by intense sun exposure, particularly common in Las Vegas where summer temperatures exceed 115 degrees. Sunscald typically appears on the south and southwest sides of trunks and major branches. Recently pruned trees are especially vulnerable because the canopy no longer shades the bark.
T
TCIA (Tree Care Industry Association)
Industry & CertificationThe national trade organization for commercial tree care companies. TCIA accreditation signifies that a company meets high standards for safety, business practices, employee training, and customer service.
Tipu Tree (Tipuana tipu)
Tree SpeciesA fast-growing South American tree that produces a broad, spreading canopy and yellow flowers. Popular in Las Vegas for rapid shade but requires regular structural pruning to prevent limb failure. Can cause pavement lifting with aggressive surface roots.
Topping
Pruning & TrimmingThe destructive practice of cutting main branches back to stubs, leaving the tree disfigured and vulnerable to disease, decay, and weak regrowth. Topping is considered malpractice by certified arborists. It leads to rapid, structurally weak regrowth that is more hazardous than the original canopy.
Why Proper Trimming MattersTransplanting
Tree Care BasicsMoving a tree from one location to another. In Las Vegas, transplanting is best done during cooler months (November through February) to minimize heat shock. Proper root ball preparation and post-transplant irrigation are critical in desert conditions.
Tree Inspection
Tree Care BasicsA thorough visual and sometimes technical examination of a tree's health, structure, and safety. Benjamin's Tree Service provides free tree inspections across the Las Vegas Valley to identify potential hazards, disease, or maintenance needs before they become costly problems.

Tree Removal & Stump WorkThe complete removal of a tree, including felling, sectioning, and clearing of all above-ground wood. Professional tree removal in Las Vegas requires careful planning due to tight lot sizes, proximity to structures, power lines, and block walls common in valley neighborhoods.
Tree Removal ServicesTree Risk Assessment (TRAQ)
Industry & CertificationA systematic process for evaluating tree-related risks, developed by ISA. TRAQ-qualified arborists assess the likelihood of tree failure and the potential consequences, providing a standardized risk rating that helps property owners make informed decisions about tree management.
Tree Assessment ReportsTree Service Plan
Industry & CertificationA scheduled maintenance program that provides regular tree care throughout the year, including seasonal pruning, health inspections, fertilization, and pest monitoring. Benjamin's Tree Service offers customized tree service plans designed for the Las Vegas Valley's unique seasonal demands.
Tree Service PlanW
Wind Throw
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificThe uprooting and toppling of a tree by wind. Wind throw is a major concern in the Las Vegas Valley where high-wind events are common, particularly in exposed areas like Summerlin and the western valley. Trees with shallow root systems (often caused by caliche or overwatering) are most susceptible.
X
Xeriscape
Las Vegas & Desert SpecificA landscaping approach designed to minimize water use, particularly relevant in the Las Vegas desert. Xeriscaping uses drought-tolerant plants, efficient irrigation, mulch, and thoughtful design. Trees are still an important part of xeriscape — species like mesquite, palo verde, and desert willow provide shade while using minimal water.
